Dr. Neelan Tiruchelvam was slated to be a visiting professor at Harvard Law School in the fall of 1999. A renowned constitutional lawyer from Sri Lanka, Neelan was better known to me as a leading Tamil human rights activist who had thrown his hat into the political ring. (more…)

தமிழீழ விடுதலை போராட்டத்தை முன்னெடுத்திருந்த தலைவர்களான அமிர்தலிங்கம், உமாமகேஸ்வரன், பத்மநாபா, ஸ்ரீசபாரத்தினம் முதல் அண்மையில் கொல்லப்பட்ட புலிகள் இயக்க தலைவர் பிரபாகரன் வரையில் அனைவரும் ஒரு காலகட்டத்தில் பட்டிணி கிடந்து அரசியல் இயக்கத்தையும் போராட்டத்தையும் முன்னெடுத்திருந்தனர். த.வி.கூ தலைவர் அமிர்தலிங்கமும் அதில் பங்கு கொண்டவர்; தனது உதவிகளை இவ் இயக்க தலைவர்களுக்கும் வழங்கியவர். ஆனால் இந்த போராட்டத்தில் தமிழ் அரசியல் தலைமை நம்மவர்களாலேயே முற்றாக அழிக்கப்பட்டது என்பதே துரதிஷ்ட்டமான உண்மை. இதன்பாரிய பொறுப்பு புலிகள் இயக்கத்தையே சாரும். I titled my biography of Appapillai Amirthalingam, former leader of opposition and leader of the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF), The Murder of a Moderate. In the opening paragraphs of the preface I wrote: Appapillai Amirthalingam, former leader of the moderate political party, Tamil United Liberation Front, was murdered first politically and then physically. The political slaying was by the Sinhala leadership and the physical by Tamil militants. Both murders had common effect- elimination of Tamil moderates as a political factor. (more…)

COLOMBO (AFP) — Sri Lanka’s main moderate Tamil political group Sunday accused the government of holding some 300,000 war-displaced civilians in “open prisons” and demanded their immediate release. The Tamil United Liberation Front said in a letter to President Mahinda Rajapakse that the ethnic Tamils who managed to escape the fighting between troops and Tamil rebels had no freedom of movement. “They are virtually kept under compulsion without any justification, giving them the feeling that they are kept in an open prison with too many restrictions and not in a welfare centre,” TULF leader V.
