COLOMBO: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has described the “proposals” submitted to him by the All Party Representative Committee (APRC) on measures for the full implementation of the provisions of the Constitution for a political solution to the ethnic question as an “auspicious and important initial step.”
Receiving the proposals from APRC Chairman Thissa Vitharana on Wednesday, Mr. Rajapaksa said the government and the political parties that supported it undertook the responsibility to fully implement the proposals. He said they all had a responsibility to ensure the rights of all people to enjoy freedom without fear irrespective of race, religious, political and other differences.
He called on all parties to shed narrow differences and come together with due consideration for the people, to provide a suitable political solution to the political issue, while looking at a different solution to the problem of terrorism.
In a speech made at the presentation ceremony, Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) president V. Anandasangaree said his party and its allies were extending support for the implementation of the 13th Amendment in full, as a first step before a final solution is recommended by the APRC. The TULF leader said his party and its allies had joined the “historic assembly that could be described as the Constituent Assembly” as a first step to bring peace to the bleeding nation and to its people. “We have joined this assembly today to show our solidarity on behalf of the Tamil people, for the re-birth of a nation where we the Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, Malays, Burgers and members of all the other small groups live as equals in all respects, in a society where one is in no way superior or inferior to the other.” (more…)

Your Excellency the President, Hon. Ministers, Hon. Members of Parliament, Leaders of Political Parties, Ladies and Gentlemen.
It may be a surprise to all of you to see me participating in today’s ceremony held to hand over an interim report of the APRC to His Excellency the President by Hon. Tissa Vitharana, I owe an explanation to the People of this country, to the International Community and also to Sri Lankans living abroad, as to why I am giving my support for the implementation of the 13th Amendment in full, as a first step before a final solution is recommended by the APRC. I speak also on behalf of Mr. D. Sitharthan and Mr. T. Sritharan representing the PLOTE and the Pathmanabha EPRLF respectively with whom the TULF has formed an alliance in the good interest of the Tamil speaking minorities. It is no secret that that we had been agitating for a solution based on the Federal concept and also offered to accept the Indian Model as an alternative if the term federal is allergic to any one. We have not changed our views in this matter and in the matter of merger of the North and the East. (more…)

தமிழர்களால் நிராகரிக்கபட்;ட தமிழ் தலைவராக என்னை குறிப்பிட்டு தமிழகத்தில் நான் கூறிய கருத்துக்களுக்கு கனவுலகில் மிதந்து கொண்டு வீராப்பு பேசும் தம்பி ஜெயானந்தமூர்த்திக்கு வரலாற்றை ஞாபகப்படுத்த விரும்புகின்றேன்.
ஜனநாயக முறையில் நடைபெற்ற கடைசித் தேர்தலில் 36,000 வாக்குகளைப் பெற்று ஒன்பது பேரில் முதன்மை உறுப்பினராக நான் தெரிவு செய்யப்பட்டேன். தம்பி ஜெயானந்தமூர்த்தியைப் போல் சத்தியமூர்த்தி, கிங்ஸ்லி இராஜநாயகம் போன்றோரை பல்லக்கில் வைத்து பரலோகம் அனுப்பிவிட்டு குறுக்குப் பாதையால் பாராளுமன்றம் சென்றவன் நான் அல்ல. காலத்துக்குக் காலம் மக்களின் பின்னால் மறைந்திருந்து வீராப்பு பேசி இன்று பல்லாயிரக்கணக்கான மக்களை நடுத்தெருவில் நிறுத்தி விட்டு இந்தியாவின் பிரதிநிதியைப் போல் பேசுவது விந்தையிலும் விந்தை. The Tamil United Liberation Front leader Veerasingam Anandasangaree welcoming the decision to abrogate the Ceasefire Agreement said that the agreement only helped the LTTE to expand its terrorist activities and to blindfold the international community.

CHENNAI: The Indian model of governance is an ideal solution to the ethnic crisis in Sri Lanka, as it will meet the aspirations of the Tamils. Furthermore, “it can be easily sold to our people,” Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) president V. Anandasangaree said on Thursday.
Speaking on ‘India and the Sri Lanka Peace Process’ at a meeting organised by the Observer Research Foundation, he appealed to leaders in Tamil Nadu to persuade the LTTE to liberate the people it had detained. “We have to liberate ourselves from the so-called liberators [LTTE].” (more…)
