I am shocked at the UNP’s decision to “re-position” itself and among many others, to drop the Federal Concept. I hasten to protest against this move and plead with the UNP Leadership not to drop the” Federal Concept. I genuinely feel that it will prove disastrous to the country that is already bleeding profusely. The UNP too as the main opposition party which, when in power, committed to the Oslo Agreement lose its credibility in the International Community. (more…)

CHENNAI: The weakening of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the eastern part of Sri Lanka should make the government find a solution to the ethnic question by coming out with a proposal based on the Indian model, according to V. Anandasangaree, president, Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF).

Describing the LTTE reverses in the east as “good in one way,” he, however, said it would not be that easy to eliminate the outfit in the north, an area with a large number of landmines.

Using the present situation, the government should try to win over people of the north, presenting a package that envisaged maximum devolution of powers to provinces, Mr. Anandasangaree, who is in Chennai on a week-long visit, told The Hindu on Thursday. (more…)

SO: Mr. Anandasangaree, what’s the latest? We heard that you visited the Eastern province recently?

V.A.: Yes. I wanted a first-hand knowledge about the lifestyle of the people and I made it a point to meet them and the relevant authorities.

SO: What was the people’s reaction after the military clearance of the province?

V.A.: They still have a lot of problems to solve. Anyway, they are happy now that they have been liberated. As a nation, we have to get together and assist them to solve their problems like transport, agriculture, food and housing etc. For example, finding building materials for a work is a difficult process. Then, the transportation. It is like a chain. That’s why I told you that there a lot to attend to. Someone should look into the needs of the people. (more…)

Unitary constitution will be a half-baked one says Anandasangaree

TULF Leader V. Anandasangaree yesterday said any solution to the ethnic problem under a unitary constitution will be a half-baked one and it will give room for further agitation in the future fuelled by the remnants of the LTTE.

He also says such a solution would take the country back to square one, into another circle of violence. (more…)

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

TULF leader V. Anandasangaree, in a statement issued yesterday, said that he was pursuing a political solution at great risk to his life and he would not mind whether he lived or not to see people of all communities in this country living peacefully, as long that elusive peace could be achieved.

He said during a recent visit to the East he saw people living in abject poverty and the Government efforts to rehabilitate them, but realized that it would take years before normalcy returns. “Only if there is a political solution fair by all three communities, can there be an economic revival in the East, Anandasangaree reasserted. *Eastern Province reflected richness of diversity of Sri Lanka

*Indian model an ideal solution for ethnic crisis

COLOMBO: Making a strong plea for an urgent ‘fair and just political solution within a United Sri Lanka’ to the ethnic conflict, preferably on the Indian model, Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) chief V. Anandasangaree said here on Wednesday that such a solution would ensure the political defeat of the LTTE and its bankrupt politics.

In a press statement here Mr. Anandasangaree expressed concern over media reports about the possibility of the All-Parties Representative Conference (APRC) coming forward with a package of proposals with a ‘unitary label.’ He warned that such a course would only strengthen the LTTE’s call for separation and give oxygen to a dying organisation and kill the hopes of those who have placed their faith in the APRC. The Unitary State Will Not Be Acceptable To Tamil and Muslim People - By V.Anandasangaree

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

The recent developments in the country have pushed me to address the people of this country, Muslims, Sinhalese and Tamils. As many people in this country are well aware, that at great risk to my life I have devoted the last years of my life to finding a political solution that will allow our children to live in peace and to prosper. We have lost too many of our leaders, our youths and ordinary people from all communities to a conflict for which we all have to share some blame. (more…)
