India, TULF trapped in their past: “The UNESCO honoured Anandasangaree for fighting for the rights of the ordinary people. The award, I am sure, is for his undisputedly courageous work during the past seven years. The UNESCO awarded the Mandanjeet Singh award carrying US $100,000 to Anandasangaree, a soft target on top of the LTTE hit list”.

Unidentified persons cut and chopped to death TULF Vice President S. Namasivayam (57) near Vyravar Kovil on June 5, 1998. Jaffna police detained a buttermilk salesman who had a personal grudge with Namasivayam. Nothing came out of the investigation. Attackers almost severed his neck and three fingers of one hand. Killers struck as he was cycling home for lunch. The horrific slaying went almost unnoticed.

The LTTE ordered him to quit active politics shortly after the assassination of Sarojinee Yogeswaran (65). He ignored the command. (more…)

TULF leader V. Ananda sangaree who is among a very few Tamil politicians who dared stand up to the guns and bullets of the LTTE in his quest to ensure democracy and pluralism for his people living under the jackboot of Tiger hegemony receves the 2006 UNESCO Madanjeet Singh Prize from the Deputy Director Genaral of UNESCO Marcio Barbosa at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on November 16. The Prize is awarded for the Promotion of Tolerance and Non-Violence.

Veteran Tamil politician Veerasingham Anandasangaree was honoured last Thursday (Nov 16) in Paris with the UNESCO Madanjeet Singh award for tolerance and non - violence. The 73 year old Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) president was descrobed as ” An indefatigable advocate of democracy and peaceful conflict resolution, he has contributed to raising awareness of the Tamil cause in a spirit of dialogue, while seeking to promote non-violent solutions to Sri Lanka and opposing terrorism. ” by UNESCO.

A former teacher and lawyer Anandasangaree has been in politics for more than four decades.Sangaree as Anandasangaree is generally known in Sri Lanka is not an exile like Taslima or under house arrest like Aung San but certainly his life is under grave threat ever since he started defying the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). Anandasangaree honoured as UNESCO Laureate in France

Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) President Veerasingham Anandasangaree was awarded the prestigious 2006 UNESCO - Madanjeet Singh prize for the promotion of Tolerance and Non - Violence on Thursday November 16th.

The prize - giving ceremony at the UNESCO house in Paris was held as usual on Nov 16th observed annually as International day for tolerance .

UNESCO Deputy - Director General Marcio Barbosa handed over the prize comprising a sculpture, certificate and cheque for US $ 100,000 as honorarium to Anandasangaree amidst thunderous applause.

“I will cherish this moment as long as I live” said the TULF leader.

Loyal TULF supporters, family members and well - wishers from different European countries and Canada were in France to be present at the function where the 73 year old veteran Tamil Politician was honoured. (more…)

Your Excellency, The President of the International Jury, Mr. Andres Pastrana Arango,

Hon Deputy Director General of UNESCO, Mr. Marcio Barbosa,

Hon Shri Madanjeet Singh Ji,

Your Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen.

“Ayubhowan” and “Vanakkam” to you all and my greetings to the UNESCO Director General Mr. Koshiro Matsuura who is not present here today.

Being bestowed with the UNESCO / Madanjeet Singh award for Tolerance and Non Violence, this honour gives me added strength and encouragement in my quest to promote the sprite of “Ahimsa” struggle for ones rights through non violent means, as practiced by the immortals of our times.

From Mahatma Gandhi, to Martin Luther King to Nelson Mandela, they all fought for the rights of their people, with peace in their hearts. Their success has greatly inspired my thoughts and actions in striving for the rights of the Tamil population in Sri Lanka, through democratic and non violent means. (more…)
