“Anandasangaree maintains his independence:
V. Anandasangaree, who functioned as the leader of the TULF, had called on Thamilchelvam only once. He did not want to pay such customary visits to Vanni, because he did not want to seek instructions from the LTTE. LTTE theoretician Anton Balasingham, who felt affronted by Anandasangaree’s refusal to dance attendance on the LTTE leadership, had reportedly said: “It was we who sent the TNA to Parliament. Therefore, they should see us whenever we send for them.” Anandasangaree publicly denounced this LTTE stand. The LTTE did not allow Anandasangaree to participate in the re-opening of the restored Jaffna public library. However, Anandasangaree could not be prevented from reopening the library. He said that the LTTE was recognised only as the representative of Tamils at peace talks, and the TNA represents the Tamil community at all other events and forums. An irate LTTE leadership, using some MPs loyal to them, succeeded in expelling Anandasangaree from the TNA. However, he managed to retain the leadership of the TULF, which is a constituent of the TNA. Even today, Anandasangaree is the leader of the TULF.”

“Indira Gandhi took Amirthalingam the next day, India’s Independence Day, to Red Fort to view the parade, an honour given to visiting heads of state”.
I think the first instance India interfered directly in Sri Lankan affairs in recent history occurred on July 19, 1983. On that afternoon Indian Additional Foreign Secretary Shankar Bajpai conveyed to Sri Lankan High Commissioner Bernard Tilakaratna India’s concern about the emergency regulation it imposed the previous day. I titled my biography of Appapillai Amirthalingam, former leader of opposition and leader of the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF), The Murder of a Moderate. In the opening paragraphs of the preface I wrote: Appapillai Amirthalingam, former leader of the moderate political party, Tamil United Liberation Front, was murdered first politically and then physically. The political slaying was by the Sinhala leadership and the physical by Tamil militants. Both murders had common effect- elimination of Tamil moderates as a political factor. (more…)

“In 1972 I was at a meeting where S.J.V. Chelvanayakam, the leader of the F.P. was present on the platform. Mr. Kasi Ananthan, a popular platform speaker, who is now a member of the L.T.T.E., told the audience:
Mr. Duraiappa, Mr. Subramaniam, Mr. Arulampalam and Mr. Anandasangeri are enemies of the Tamil nation. They do not deserve a natural death. Nor do they deserve to die in an accident. The Tamil people, especially the youth, must decide how they should die…. (more…)

The conflict between the Sri Lankan government and the Tamil Tigers has deep, tangled roots. But to a rough order of magnitude, the moral stakes can be reduced to a single act of terrorist savagery that took place on July 29, 1999 — the day Neelan Tiruchelvam was blown out the side of his Nissan sedan by a female suicide bomber riding a moped. “The problem here is that leaders are imposed on a community. People are forced to elect someone who they do not have any confidence in. Then problems start. This is what has happened to the LTTE. When Pirabhakaran forced himself to be the leader, the people started to distance themselves further away from him,” - Anandasangaree
The military thrust against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and thereby weakening them, has certainly offered fresh options to the moderate Tamil political parties in Sri Lanka.
The Tamil parties have two options. Either join hands together or work separately but with a view to aiming at a common goal – to achieve a substantial political solution to the Tamil minority.
With the apparent defeat of the LTTE, it is no secret that even the Vaddukodai resolution of 1976 is laid to eternal rest. (more…)
