Why TNA decided to back Fonseka

“Anandasangaree maintains his independence:

V. Anandasangaree, who functioned as the leader of the TULF, had called on Thamilchelvam only once. He did not want to pay such customary visits to Vanni, because he did not want to seek instructions from the LTTE. LTTE theoretician Anton Balasingham, who felt affronted by Anandasangaree’s refusal to dance attendance on the LTTE leadership, had reportedly said: “It was we who sent the TNA to Parliament. Therefore, they should see us whenever we send for them.” Anandasangaree publicly denounced this LTTE stand. The LTTE did not allow Anandasangaree to participate in the re-opening of the restored Jaffna public library. However, Anandasangaree could not be prevented from reopening the library. He said that the LTTE was recognised only as the representative of Tamils at peace talks, and the TNA represents the Tamil community at all other events and forums. An irate LTTE leadership, using some MPs loyal to them, succeeded in expelling Anandasangaree from the TNA. However, he managed to retain the leadership of the TULF, which is a constituent of the TNA. Even today, Anandasangaree is the leader of the TULF.”

Professor Carlo Fonseka explains why the Tamil community should vote for President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Presidential Elections on January 26. President Rajapaksa has the wish, desire, capacity and the public support necessary to grant maximum possible relief in regard to devolution of power to the Tamil people. President Mahinda Rajapaksa is the only frontline Sinhalese political leader who talks to the Tamil people in the Tamil language. In fact, he was the first to speak in Tamil at the UN General Assembly. (more…)

World Politics Review: Lessons Learned for Sri Lanka

Iranga Kahangama

“A federal state can be created around moderate Tamil politicians, untainted by LTTE connections, such as Tamil United Liberation Front party leader V. Anandasangaree, who has previously called for a peaceful federal solution. An open critic of the LTTE, Anandasangaree also resisted joining the rest of his party in the Tamil National Alliance — a coalition that supported the Tigers in 2004″.

Last month, the Indian central government abruptly ended days of violent protests by carving out a federal state for the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh. In an effort to end a five-decade-long internal conflict, the world’s largest democracy ceded a state for the greater good of stability and governance. India’s war-weary neighbor, Sri Lanka, would do well to take a page from New Delhi’s playbook as it looks to foster peaceful relations with its own minority Tamil population. (more…)

By Sudha Ramachandran

“The TULF’s candidate for the post of Jaffna’s mayor, Veerasingham Anandasangari, has been an outspoken critic of the LTTE, refusing to accept its claims of being the sole representative of the Tamils. Although his position on the war against the LTTE was in sync with that of the government, he isn’t a part of the government. His party is going it alone in the elections”.

BANGALORE - A little over a month after the end of the war between the Sri Lankan Army and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), political parties are gearing up for another fight in Sri Lanka. (more…)

“In 1972 I was at a meeting where S.J.V. Chelvanayakam, the leader of the F.P. was present on the platform. Mr. Kasi Ananthan, a popular platform speaker, who is now a member of the L.T.T.E., told the audience:

Mr. Duraiappa, Mr. Subramaniam, Mr. Arulampalam and Mr. Anandasangeri are enemies of the Tamil nation. They do not deserve a natural death. Nor do they deserve to die in an accident. The Tamil people, especially the youth, must decide how they should die…. (more…)

“The civilians risked their lives while fleeing from the LTTE held areas…. If the government suspects such people as Tamil Tigers, then the entire population of the two districts – Killinochchi and Mullaitivu – should be suspects. Then the government will never solve the problem.”

Sri Lanka’s civilian death toll climbs: Military, Tamil Tigers blame each other

“Firing should stop,” Mr. Anandasangaree, a former MP and the leader of the Tamil United Liberation Front party, said in an interview. “The government has no business to kill people like this.”

He said he believed the latest casualty figures because he had heard them directly from a doctor at the hospital that received the dead and injured.

“These are 100 per cent true,” he said.

Both sides in Sri Lanka’s civil war accused each other of killing civilians this weekend, as a hospital reported that hundreds had died during an artillery barrage. (more…)

“politicians like Mr. Anandasangari who have a correct vision of the problem can play a vital role in bringing about lasting peace to the country”

It was the 25th of May 1972, the day following Vesak when I left for Jaffna to take up my first appointment as an uncertificated teacher of English at the Kilinochchi Sinhala Vidyalaya on the basic salary of Rs. 220 a month.

During this period Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya and Mannar came under the purview of the Regional Director of Education, Jaffna and the post was held by Vijitha Abeyesekera. Next to him was the chief education officer K. Kanagasabhapathi. Kilinochchi was then an education circuit in which the circuit education officer was T. Rasalingam who was later elected to Parliament from the Uduppidy electorate.
When I first stepped down at the Jaffna railway station I heard that a railway compartment had been set on fire as a symbol of protest against the declaration of Sri Lanka as a Democratic Republic. (more…)
