“Anandasangaree maintains his independence:
V. Anandasangaree, who functioned as the leader of the TULF, had called on Thamilchelvam only once. He did not want to pay such customary visits to Vanni, because he did not want to seek instructions from the LTTE. LTTE theoretician Anton Balasingham, who felt affronted by Anandasangaree’s refusal to dance attendance on the LTTE leadership, had reportedly said: “It was we who sent the TNA to Parliament. Therefore, they should see us whenever we send for them.” Anandasangaree publicly denounced this LTTE stand. The LTTE did not allow Anandasangaree to participate in the re-opening of the restored Jaffna public library. However, Anandasangaree could not be prevented from reopening the library. He said that the LTTE was recognised only as the representative of Tamils at peace talks, and the TNA represents the Tamil community at all other events and forums. An irate LTTE leadership, using some MPs loyal to them, succeeded in expelling Anandasangaree from the TNA. However, he managed to retain the leadership of the TULF, which is a constituent of the TNA. Even today, Anandasangaree is the leader of the TULF.”

“In 1972 I was at a meeting where S.J.V. Chelvanayakam, the leader of the F.P. was present on the platform. Mr. Kasi Ananthan, a popular platform speaker, who is now a member of the L.T.T.E., told the audience:
Mr. Duraiappa, Mr. Subramaniam, Mr. Arulampalam and Mr. Anandasangeri are enemies of the Tamil nation. They do not deserve a natural death. Nor do they deserve to die in an accident. The Tamil people, especially the youth, must decide how they should die…. (more…)

(The writer served as an Advisor to President Kumaratunga from 2001 to 2005.)
“Few would fault the Sri Lankan Government for having failed to strike a deal with the intransigent and violent LTTE, but many would wonder, point an accusing finger and lay blame if we fail to strike a deal with the moderate, non violent, non LTTE, democratic Tamil political leaders, like Anandasangari, Douglas et al.”
The war is over and won all credit to the armed forces and the Commander in Chief. The LTTE is finished and the task before us now is to unite a polarized society and create a new Sri Lanka, with a Sri Lankan identity that accommodates the full linguistic, religious and cultural diversity of Sri Lankan society. The challenge is to ensure that the Sri Lankan state reflects this rich diversity of its society. (more…)

“The problem here is that leaders are imposed on a community. People are forced to elect someone who they do not have any confidence in. Then problems start. This is what has happened to the LTTE. When Pirabhakaran forced himself to be the leader, the people started to distance themselves further away from him,” - Anandasangaree
The military thrust against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and thereby weakening them, has certainly offered fresh options to the moderate Tamil political parties in Sri Lanka.
The Tamil parties have two options. Either join hands together or work separately but with a view to aiming at a common goal – to achieve a substantial political solution to the Tamil minority.
With the apparent defeat of the LTTE, it is no secret that even the Vaddukodai resolution of 1976 is laid to eternal rest. (more…)

Colombo (Asiantribune.com): “There is no question of genocide against the Tamils. I have already explained this to the people of Jaffna, when I was last time there. In a meeting in Jaffna, where more than one thousand people attended and in my address, I told them that the charges of genocide is all rubbish,” said V. Anandasangari, leader of the Tamil United Liberation Front. (more…)

Commencing with an all party protest fast initiated by the Indian Communist party, the month of October had been a hectic one for the state of Tamil Nadu in India.
The protest fast was concerning the plight of Sri Lankan Tamils in the north.Besides, the Minister of Local Governance and Deputy Treasurer of the DMK, M.K. Stalin has also called for a human chain protest on Tuesday 21, in Chennai, against what he described as, ‘atrocities against the innocent Tamils in the north of Sri Lanka’. (more…)

Anandasangaree is a man with a mission. He has two goals. One is to ensure that Sri Lankans in general and Tamils in particular live in peace, equality and amity. For this he sees a federal set up on the Indian model as the solution. Secondly, he wants the Tamil people to be truly free. For this he wants the iron grip of the LTTE to be relaxed. He wants the LTTE to reform or face consequences.
What has been remarkable about the man is his dogged determination to articulate his viewpoint and advocate a negotiated settlement to the ethnic crisis on federal lines. He speaks out against the war and wants the problem to be resolved peacefully. Sangaree admires the Indian model and wants Sri Lanka to follow that example. He wants ethnic amity and harmony based on justice and equality.
Eighteen members were elected to Parliament from the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) in 1977. This was an election of historic importance, where the TULF contested on a separatist platform, saying a victory at the polls was a mandate for Tamil Eelam.
Three decades and more have passed since then. Thirteen of the 18 MPs elected in 1977 are not among the living now. Of the remaining ex-MPs, three have retired from politics. They are K.P. Ratnam, C. Rajadurai and P. Soosaithasan.
The two veteran TULF leaders who are in active politics at present are Rajavarothayam Sambandan and Veerasingham Anandasangaree.
Both are at loggerheads with each other, though Anandasangaree is the TULF President and Sambandan its Secretary General. A legal dispute concerning the party has rendered it virtually inactive.

The above matters apart, it is to the writer, inconceivable, how any person with an iota of commonsense or decency, can even dream of sharing governmental power in our land, with a gang of criminals led by a convict, whose crimes against humanity include mass murder, genocide and training youth to commit suicide, inter alia, by detonating explosives strapped to their persons and indiscriminately murdering and/or maiming all who happen to be in the vicinity. Who, among those who advocate “power sharing”, including Kumaratunga, would be prepared to be ruled by these inhuman scoundrels ??? (more…)

Colombo, 22 October, (Asiantribune.com): One of Sri Lanka’s veteran politician V Anandasangaree when addressing at the International Conference on Countering Terrorism, stressed the need for the Government of Sri Lanka to take appropriate steps to eliminate the frustration caused by racial discrimination, oppression, disparities, deprivations, denial of human rights etc., that is presently prevailing in the midst of the minority ethnic groups in the country. He has also recommended measures to be adopted by the Government and insisted for a solution based on the Indian modelconstitution that would satisfy those who are opposed to the Federal and Unitary type of constitution. He pointed out that the Indian one is neither federal nor unitary and the Indians take pride in saying that they believe in “Unity in diversity”.V Anandasangaree said that the failure of the Members of Parliament representing the North and the East, made him to take the responsibility to free the people from the LTTE’s subjugation.
Anandasangaree spoke on 20th October, on the last day of the 3-day International Conference on Countering Terrorism held at the committee room of the Bandaranaike Memorial Conference Hall, Colombo. (more…)

I consider it as a great honour for having been invited to address the International Conference on Countering Terrorism. I thank the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute of International Relations and Strategic Studies (LKIIRSS) for the invitation. The theme of this conference is “Terrorism – A Challenge to Democratically Elected Governments” and the topic assigned to me is “Transforming Terrorists – Lessons for Sri Lanka,” a subject that is not easy to handle in the Sri Lankan perspective. The problem of transforming terrorists is multi-faced, complicating and peculiar to Sri Lanka. Hence a briefing of the situation in Sri Lanka is necessary. (more…)
